Now Playing: Kansas City Fall
WindowsMedia
I actually lived briefly in Kansas City, MO during my days as an organizer. We shared a wonderful overgrown jungle of a backyard with our upstairs neighbors, one of whom was a Native American poet. I spent many a hot and humid evening sitting with her on top of a shed roof which abutted the house. From this vantage point, we could look down into our backyard and also had a great view of the sunset over the distant plains. It was definitely a cool spot, bringing to mind secret childhood forts since we had to crawl out her window to get onto the shed roof, and there was such a tangle of vines on the side of it that you could easily imagine you were in the wilderness. She had hauled a plastic children's wading pool up there and filled it with the garden hose. We'd sit in the pool and talk and drink a beer while our husbands tended the barbeque grill down in the "jungle."
